Robust and accurate engineering simulations

Impetus BASIC is an advanced simulation tool designed for dynamic and non-linear quasistatic mechanical processes, with primary applications in the Automotive, Manufacturing, and Oil & Gas sectors.

At its core, Impetus BASIC revolves around a Finite Element solver, empowered by GPU acceleration for efficient modelling of thermo-mechanical processes. Complementing its robust computational engine is a modern multi-user GUI, an effective job manager, and potent post-processing capabilities.

The Finite Element engine in Impetus Solver relies on explicit time integration, making it particularly well-suited for transient dynamic events. Nevertheless, its versatility extends to an efficient handling of non-linear quasi-static processes.

The driving forces behind Impetus Solver’s development are precision, numerical stability, and user-friendly functionality. The Finite Element engine’s strength is based on its exceptional element formulations and on a robust contact treatment.

Main features

Crash and impact

Ideal for designing components and vehicle sub-structures, that require a high level of detail. A full 3D representation of stresses, strains and of relevant connectors ensures high fidelity simulation results. Verify convergence with easy-to-use built-in tools for mesh refinement.

Dropped object

Accidental loading is a concern across various industries, whether it involves food packaging, electronic equipment, or heavy steel structures in the offshore industry.

Impetus Solver, with explicit time integration and a robust contact algorithm, is a versatile tool for simulations related to accidental loading. Additionally, smart functions for merging disjointed meshes simplify the modelling of complex geometries.

Quasi-static processes

Impetus Solver employs explicit time integration. As such, it is not an ideal tool for linear statics. Add any level of non-linearity, may it be due to friction, material behaviour or large deformations, and it might be the simulation tool of choice.

Bolts and connections

Easy modelling and evaluation of 3D bolted connections including pre-torque. Functionality for glued interfaces, rivets and welds. Model welds with the correct throat-section and account for the heat affected zone.

Additional capabilities

Sheet metal forming

Well suited for intricate stamping processes, such as those involving rubber pads, thermal coupling, or thick-walled components.

Stretch-bending

Highly efficient for stretch-bending simulations, thanks to higher order solid element formulations and regularisation techniques.

Crash and impact

Predict energy absorption, deformations, and failure modes in intricate components and structures.

Hot rolling

Build your own virtual hot rolling plant. impetus basic supports model parametrisation, full thermo-mechanical coupling, and intricate material models for hot forming operations.

Quasi-static processes

Innovative methods for achieving numerically efficient solutions to quasi-static processes, when employing explicit time integration.

Bolted connections

Streamlined and user-friendly functionality for bolt pre-stressing, and algorithms for an accurate prediction of failure in bolted connections.

Dropped object

Impetus basic is effective for simulating dropped object scenarios. typical applications range from small electronic devices hitting ground to dropped ISO containers or pipe baskets impacting sensitive offshore platform structures.

Metal models with adiabatic softening

Predict catastrophic loss of strength, due to the development of adiabatic shear bands. for some high strength steels this is an effect that can occur at strain rates well below 1000s-1.

Ceramic models

Predict tensile failure or crushing of ceramic components. size effect considerations are possible through the utilisation of stochastic defect distributions.

Fiber composite models

Model individual plies within your composite layup, study the full 3d stress state and forecast delamination using cohesive failure criteria.

Concrete model

Cutting-edge concrete model designed for both quasi-static and highly dynamic loading conditions. a meticulously calibrated and well-documented material object is readily accessible on the Impetus MARKET.

Weld modelling (cross section haz)

Easy modelling of weld connections. straightforward definitions of material softening and reduced ductility in heat affected zones (HAZ).

Metal calibration template

Let our interactive metal calibration application optimise your plastic hardening curves, and damage and mesh sensitivity parameters.

Accidental loading

Smart functions for merging disjoint meshes simplifies modelling complex geometries. adding explicit time integration and a robust contact algorithm makes impetus solver a versatile tool for accidental loading simulations.

Sandwich components

Model sandwich components with true layouts of face sheets and foam core.

Hybrid iii dummy

Fully calibrated 50th percentile frontal impact hybrid iii dummy available on Impetus MARKET.

Advanced material models

An extensive collection of models and calibrations for various material classes is available. leveraging the advantages of GPU acceleration allows for prioritising accuracy over speed.

Dynamic relaxation

Use our specially designed functionality to cut high frequencies and obtain efficient computational performance.
